The
Ottomans conquered most of Bosnia in 1463, and by 1483 controlled
most of Herzegovina as well. The two territories, then separated,
remained provinces of the Ottoman Empire for the next 400 years.
Here, a mosque built by the Ottomans stands near Mostar. Mostar
was severely damaged as a result of the civil war that followed
Bosnia and Herzegovina's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia
in 1992.
